Getting started

What Blungie is, where to get it and what it costs.

What is Blungie?

Blungie is an Android app that helps you learn English words by seeing them. You scroll through a feed of picture cards. Each card teaches one meaning of one English word, with an illustration, an AI voice, the meaning in your language and a real example sentence with its translation.

Tap Add to learning on the words you want. They come back later as short review games, timed to your memory. The word library is growing. Today most words are at A1 and A2 level, with a few at B1 and B2.

Is Blungie on Google Play? Is there an iPhone version?

Not yet. Blungie is getting ready for Google Play, and this website will link to it as soon as it is available. The download page always shows the current status.

Blungie is made for Android phones with Android 8.0 or newer. There is no iPhone (iOS) or web version today.

Which languages does Blungie support?

Blungie teaches English and explains it in your language. The app, the meanings and the sentence translations are available in 12 languages: Turkish, Spanish, Portuguese (Brazil), German, French, Italian, Arabic, Russian, Japanese, Korean, Chinese (Simplified) and Hindi. In Arabic, the app reads from right to left.

On first launch, Blungie uses your phone's language if it is one of these. Otherwise it starts in Turkish, and you can switch on the welcome screen or later in Settings. There is no English interface, because English is the language you are learning.

Do I need an account?

No. You can start right away as a guest, without an email address or a password.

If you want to keep your progress safe and continue on another phone, sign in with Google (Continue with Google) or with your email address. Blungie does not offer Apple, Facebook or phone-number sign-in.

Does Blungie cost anything? Are there ads?

Blungie has no ads, subscriptions or in-app purchases today. You can use everything in the app without paying.

Feed & words

Cards, adding words, collections and content quality.

How does the feed work?

The Feed is a vertical stream of word cards. A short swipe up brings the next one. Each card shows one meaning of an English word: a large picture, a speaker button, the meaning in your language, and an example sentence with its translation and its own audio.

Every 8 to 12 cards, a word you are already learning comes back for a quick check. You can also open a deck or a topic from Home to see its words in the feed, or search for a word in English or in your own language. Search needs an internet connection.

Does scrolling past a card count as learning it?

No. Scrolling is just browsing. A word joins your learning plan only when you add it. That way, your reviews contain only the words you chose.

How do I add a word to learning?

Tap Add to learning on the card, or double-tap the picture. The word joins your review plan and appears in My Words.

Changed your mind? Use Remove from learning. You can undo it straight away.

I added lots of words. Why don't they all arrive at once?

Your daily goal decides how many new words start each day. The rest wait their turn in the Up next list and start on the following days. Reviews that are due always come first.

This keeps each day short and stops reviews from piling up. Want more or fewer new words? Change your daily goal in Settings.

How do collections and sharing work?

In My Words, open your collections to group words your way, for example for a trip. You can open a collection in the feed with Study in feed or practise it with Review.

To share one, tap Share collection and send the link with WhatsApp or any other app. A link can hold up to 120 words. If your friend has Blungie, the link opens the app so they can add the collection. If not, they see a preview of the words in their browser.

Deleting a collection does not remove its words from My Words.

A translation, picture or sound looks wrong. How do I report it?

Open the word's detail screen and choose Report a problem. Tell us in a few words what looks wrong. Our content team reads every report, and each one makes Blungie better for everyone.

Good to know: the pictures and voices are made with AI tools, and the translations are AI-assisted and then reviewed by our editors. They are not certified by native speakers, so your reports really help. You can also use the contact form and choose Report a content problem.

Review & memory ladder

The four games, spacing, streaks and settings.

How do reviews work?

The words you add come back in the Review tab as four short games, always in this order:

  1. Listen & tap the picture
  2. Match words with their meanings
  3. Fill the gap in a real example sentence
  4. Type it in English from memory

A session has up to 10 words, and anything you miss is asked once more at the end of the round. There are no buttons for rating yourself: Blungie works out how well you remembered from your answers and plans your next review for you.

What is the memory ladder?

Each word you learn climbs a ladder of growing gaps: 10 minutes, 1 day, 3 days, 1 week, about 2 weeks, about 1 month, 3 months and 6 months.

Remember a word well and it moves up a step, so it comes back less often. If it was hard, the next gap is shorter. If you forgot it, it starts again from 10 minutes. A word counts as learned once you remember it after a gap of about a month.

An answer you saw in the last 10 minutes, or one you found with a hint, counts as practice, not as remembering. You can see each word's step on its detail screen, under Memory ladder.

Can I practise without changing my review plan?

Yes. In the Review tab, choose Free practice to play with your words whenever you like. It never changes your schedule. It simply helps what you know stick.

What counts toward my streak?

A day counts when you add a new word or finish a review. Your profile shows your current and best streak, along with a monthly calendar of the days you studied.

How do I change my language, level or daily goal?

Open Settings from your profile. There you can change your native language, your English level (A1 to C2) and your daily goal of 3, 5, 8, 12 or 20 new words. Reminders, sounds, vibration, automatic audio and reduced motion are there too.

Your level is always your own choice; there is no placement test. To see the first-run guide again, choose How to use.

Notifications

Word of the day and review reminders.

What is the Word of the day notification?

Once a day, Blungie can show you a notification with a big picture and a word you haven't added yet. Right from the notification, you can tap Add to learning, choose In 1 hour to see it again later, or choose Quiet today to mute notifications for the rest of the day.

It arrives at 12:30 by default. You can change the time or turn it off in Settings.

My reminders don't arrive. What can I do?

Reminders are scheduled on your phone, so a few phone settings matter:

  • Allow notifications for Blungie in your phone's settings (usually Settings › Apps › Blungie › Notifications).
  • Turn off battery optimisation for Blungie. Some phones delay or block reminders to save battery.
  • Check Blungie's own settings. Reminders should be on, at a time that suits you (20:00 by default).

Also keep in mind: Blungie sends at most two notifications a day, never between 22:00 and 09:30, and Quiet today mutes the rest of the day. Reminder text is hidden on the lock screen.

Account & data

Signing in, exporting and deleting your data.

What happens to my guest progress when I sign in?

If you create a new account with Google or email while using Blungie as a guest, your progress moves into that new account.

If you sign in to an account that already exists, your guest progress is not merged into it. The app warns you before you continue, so you can decide.

How can I export my data?

In the app, go to Profile › Account & privacy › Export my data. Blungie creates a JSON file with your profile, progress, collections and learning activity, and you choose where to save it.

How do I delete my account?

In the app, go to Profile › Account & privacy › Delete my account and type DELETE to confirm. For your security, you may be asked to enter your password or choose your Google account again.

Your Blungie profile, progress, collections and problem reports are deleted straight away. The account deletion page explains exactly what is deleted and what is kept, and how to ask us if you can't open the app.

What data does Blungie keep about me?

Only what the app needs to work: your settings, your learning progress and activity, your collections, any problem reports you send, your name if you give one, and your email address if you sign in with email or Google. There are no advertising, analytics or crash-reporting tools in the app.

The privacy policy explains everything in detail, including where your data is stored and what your rights are.

Troubleshooting

Audio, offline use, new phones and sign-in problems.

I can't hear any audio. What should I check?

Turn up your phone's media volume, not just the ringer. The first time a sound plays, it needs an internet connection. After that, recently played audio is stored on your phone and also plays offline.

Want words to play on their own? Turn on automatic audio in Settings. If one particular word sounds wrong or has no audio, report it from that word's detail screen. All voices in Blungie are AI-generated.

Can I use Blungie offline?

Partly. Blungie keeps your most recent cards and your due reviews on your phone, so a short session still works when the connection drops. What you do offline is saved (Offline · actions saved) and synced automatically when you are back online.

Search, new cards and the first setup need an internet connection, and there is no full offline download.

I got a new phone. How do I keep my progress?

Your progress belongs to your account, not to your phone. On the new phone, sign in with the same Google account or email address you used before.

If you have only used Blungie as a guest so far, first create an account on your old phone with Google or email, so your progress moves into it. Then sign in on the new phone.

Google sign-in doesn't work. What can I do?

Check your internet connection and make sure a Google account is added to your phone. If your phone asks you to update Google Play services, do that first, then try Continue with Google again.

You can keep learning as a guest in the meantime. If it still doesn't work, write to us with your phone model and Android version, and we will look into it.

Earlier app

Help for English Ecosystem, formerly Next Stage English.

I use English Ecosystem (formerly Next Stage English). Where can I get help?

English Ecosystem, previously called Next Stage English, is our earlier app. It is separate from Blungie: accounts and progress are not shared between the two apps.

For help with it, write to the same address, Blungieapp@gmail.com, or use the contact form and choose Earlier app: English Ecosystem. If you have a subscription in the earlier app, you can manage or cancel it in Google Play, under Payments & subscriptions.

How do I delete my English Ecosystem account?

Write to us from the email address you use in English Ecosystem and ask us to delete your account. If you choose Earlier app: English Ecosystem in the contact form, the subject line is filled in for you.

Deleting an account does not cancel a Google Play subscription, so please cancel any subscription in Google Play as well.
